The Winkies (Chrysalis CHR 1066) 1975
This pub rock band formed in mid-1973. Phil Rainbow was originally from
Canada via the USA, where he'd been in a band called Saturday Night. Guy
Humphrys had been in Holy Rollers and was later in Fallen Angels.
During February 1974 they toured with Brian Eno as his backing band. Soon
afterwards they won a recording contract with Chrysalis. In July 1974, they
recorded their first album, produced by Leo Lyons (of Ten Years After).
It also featured on keyboard Chick Churchill (also of Ten Years After)
and even Brian Eno on one track. Eventually the album was scrapped and
remained unreleased. Another, to be produced by Guy Steves also failed to
emerge. Eventually, an eponymous effort saw the light of day in March 1975.
